While I consider myself lucky to have started my professional career with a ‘magic circle’ law firm in the City of London, it didn’t take me long to work out that doing mega deals as a corporate lawyer wasn’t my true calling. But it did take some time to work out what was. My lightbulb moment came when I realised that my biggest passion was the great outdoors (particularly if there was a mountain to climb or an adventure to be had) but that this playground – our natural environment – was in serious danger. This fired me up and I knew I wanted to do something about it.
I’ve worked in environmental sustainability for almost 20 years – in government, professional services and the non-profit sector, where I held multiple executive roles. Now as a coach I can draw on this broad professional experience (along with an MBA from a top US business school) – from working with boards, setting strategies, implementing programs and managing teams, to being regarded as a trusted advisor and ethical guardian. I’ve had my fair share of triumphs and plenty of frustrations too but what has always driven me is a deep-rooted desire to make a positive impact.
So why become a coach? Partly, because I was at a stage in my life when I was ready for a new challenge, and I was attracted by the idea of setting up my own business and being my own boss. At the same time I wanted to broaden and expand my impact. While I’ll always be passionate about environmental sustainability, there are so many other fields where powerful leadership is also needed if we’re to create a better world. Lastly, I’m a firm believer in doing what you enjoy, and I get HUGE satisfaction from helping others to flourish professionally and live happier, more fulfilling lives.
Outside work, I love spending time with my family, hiking on Dartmoor, exploring Britain’s rainforests (yes, we really do have temperate rainforests), running, playing the electric guitar (badly), taking photographs and following Arsenal’s men and women (I have a high pain threshold!). I'm also proud to volunteer as a business mentor with the Prince’s Trust.
